Being fit is important to me as well as many other people. Fitness is a passion of mine and so is beauty. The most important aspect of beauty is healthy, glowing skin. Luckily, fitness and healthy eating help skin stay beautiful. Fitness helps us stay healthy internally but it also helps us look great externally. One of the best secrets for beautiful skin would be to stop time and the aging process. For some of my clients, fitness almost stops the hands of time and it’s proven during the yearly physical. For example, one of my clients who is a 50-year-old female has a physiology age of 32 years old. That means that when compared to other women her age she was in better shape. In fact, her physiology lined up more closely with that of a 32-year-old woman. Physiology includes the measurement of cholesterol, blood pressure, disease risks, cardiovascular capacity and even muscular strength.

Make Friends with Fibre

Eating plenty of fiber can affect your beautiful skin in more ways than one. However, your body needs to digest the fiber in a specific way. Soluble fiber is a type of fiber that dissolves into a gel-like texture. That texture makes you feel full longer and can be found in cucumbers, blueberries, beans, and nuts. Another type of fiber is known as insoluble fiber which doesn’t dissolve at all and adds bulk to your stool. Insoluble fiber can be found in dark leafy vegetables, green beans, celery, and carrots. Both types of fiber can be found in some fruits and vegetables and both types have been found to help move yeast and fungus out of your body. Removing yeast and fungus from your body with fiber can prevent them from being excreted through your skin, causing acne or rashes.

Don’t be Afraid of Sweat

Sweat is meant to help cool the body but where sweat comes from is important as well. Sweat comes from dilated pores and on its way out it removes dirt and oil. Basically, sweating is like a natural, mini-facial. However, in order to get the most from a sweaty cardio workout, you must wash your face right after you sweat. If you let the sweat sit and dry up, everything that was removed will just be moved to other pores. Not only is sweat cleaning out your pores during an intense workout, you’re also reducing body-wide inflammation. That workout is also opening up arteries in your skin which allows nutrients in the blood to repair sun or environmental damage. Collagen will rev up thanks to those nutrients and wrinkles will be reduced.

Some Fat is Good

One of the most important fats we eat is known as omega-3 which has anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-6 fats are the opposite, these will actually cause inflammation. Omega-6 fats can be found in vegetable and seed oils and omega-3 fats can be found in fish oils, hemp hearts, and chia seeds. Since vegetable and seed oils are used most often in home cooking and processed foods, omega-6 fats are more common. It’s important to eat more omega-3 fats than -6 fats. Omega-3 fats have been known to plump up the skin, reduce inflammation and help produce a hormone called insulin-like growth factor or IGF-1. IGF-1 is known to reduce spots and blemishes and even reduce body fat over time.

Yoga Helps

Having a healthy blood flow can help reduce toxins in the body. Some poses in yoga, especially inverted postures, and forward bends will increase blood supply to the head. More oxygenated blood flow to your face will help your skin glow. Increasing blood flow to a specific area will also increase the number of nutrients delivered to that area. More nutrients mean more supple, nice parts of the body. Overall, yoga will help your body detoxify and improve the digestive process

Wash, Wash, Wash

An obvious tip which is most often skipped is to wash your face before bed. Leaving makeup and dirt on your skin will clog pores, dryness, and even dandruff. What you may not know is that makeup contains a sugar-type molecule that may grow yeast overnight. These molecules will prevent you from getting that clear, radiant, beautiful skin you want. Make sure to get everything off, every night with a gentle, oil-free cleanser that will remove even waterproof liner and mascara.

Protein it Up

There are multiple benefits to protein but the most important two include healthy skin and increased muscle mass. The amino acids found in protein create collagen which thickens your skin and makes it look clearer. As the only food group that also grows muscle, it’s important to get as much as possible. You can add protein to your diet by adding foods like chicken, beef, eggs, whey protein powders, and some vegan protein powders as well. Amino acids are important for more than just muscle growth and great skin. Your body will use these amino acids to repair damaged tissue, build strong hair and nails and keep your bones healthy. If you don’t get enough of those amino acids, your body will slowly stop producing that collagen on its own as you age. That reduced collagen will lead to wrinkles, cellulite and a loss of volume in your face. I recommend eating .8g-1g/lb of body weight. For example, if you weigh 150lbs, eat 150g of protein per day.

Sleep it Off

Getting the right amount of sleep is nothing new, after all, it’s called beauty sleep for a reason. Not getting enough sleep will lower circulation leading to pale skin, dark circles under your eyes, and an overall washed out look. While you sleep, your body is working hard to regenerate from the day’s work and rejuvenate your beautiful skin. Get as much REM sleep as possible in order to get the most benefits from your body’s natural process.
